visual studio code - vscode red highlighting of HTML tags

When I click on a closing tag in HTML in vscode, it paints both sides a light pink

Then, when I click away, the tags flash red for a split second.

I don't think I've ever seen this highlighting before. It's flashy and unpleasant to look at. I think some extension is causing it, but I'm not sure which. The extensions I have installed include CSS Peek, filesize, HTML CSS Support, html tag wrapper, Import Cost, QuokkaJS, Auto Rename Tag (disabled), Bracker Pair Colorizer (disabled), ESLint (disabled), Live Sass Compiler (disabled), Prettier (disabled).

Is there a way to get rid of this? I've tried deleting the entire /.code directory and uninstalling and reinstalling vscode, but that didn't help.

UPDATE: Even with all the extensions disabled, the problem presists.
