urllib - Use client certificates to python Urllib2 to do PUT request

I am Having,

path_cert = "/path/cert"
path_key = "/path/key"
data = {"_id:"1234",
        "date": datetime.datetime.now()}

How can I use the above cert, key, and data to do the urllib2 PUT request?

I used urllib2.urlopen(url, data, cafile=path_cert, capath=path_key) but getting error as urlopen () got an unexpected keyword argument 'cafile'

Can someone guide me, how can I use urrlib2 to do PUT request with certificates?
