path - how to get rootpath in node.js

Question

I have a folder called "helper", in that folder I have tools.js, I need to get the path to a folder called "data" from tools.js.

I have this right now, but that does not work as I thought.

let myPath = __dirname + "../data/";

RootFolder
  Helperools.js
 Data

How do I get the path to my rootfolder so that I can append the data folder to it and get the desired path?
