alexa - Capabilities of custom Skill Messages API?

Question

I've seen in the API that one can send arbitrary data to the Alexa Skills Messaging API (reference).

The message you want to send to the skill, in the following format:

{
    data:{ },
    expiresAfterSeconds: integer                                                                 
}

I also noticed that this content falls under Skill Events API, used for subscribing to events like "enables or disabling the skill."

From these two datapoints, can you help me understand:

1. How could one utilize custom messages. For example, could one prep content for an intent or even trigger an intent?
2. What is the relationship between Skill Events and the Skill Messaging API?
